The Vietnamese Golden Cypress (Cupressus vietnamensis, formerly Xanthocyparis vietnamensis) was discovered in 1999. It was first observed during an expedition in the mountains of the Ha Giang Province of northern Vietnam.
Xanthocyparis vietnamensis has the unusual feature of producing juvenile growth even on mature trees.
Ha Giang (locally in the Bat Dai Son mountain system).
Habitat On limestone ridges in montane cloud forest, between 1060 and 1180 m asl.
Conservation status Critically Endangered. This species is restricted to only a handful of sites in a 50 km2 area, with an estimated 560 trees alive.
