Notes from artist:You have two wonderful examples of a "glaze" series that I made 30 some years ago in a very limited number, all signed dated and numbered in series. While I made pieces in various shapes, the gourd was the focus of this series, inspired by Japanese hiotan gourds which were commonly used for holding saki and other liquids. The cords were made by my wife using the traditional Japanese silk braiding technique called kumihimo. Such cords were used widely for everything from attaching inro to the belt that went around the obi to attaching the lacquered plates to samurai armor.
