As a big fan of Opal I can't say that there is another type of Opal that captivates me more than Mexican Fire Opal. Why? Because it plays with the light differently than other opals. This is caused by an additional mineral called Rutile that has needle like inclusions within the Opal. Sometimes these needles melt enhancing the refractive index of the color flash wothin the Opal. This is a fine example of Jelly Opal. In very pure concentrations of Fire Opal the Rutile will melt and the opaque Opal will become clear. It is a small percentage of the deposit that has this clarity Opal. The whole rainbow is on display in this incredible Cabochon. The intensity of flash is as high as it can be and the play of color covers the entire gemstone and is highly aesthetic. A true Opal lovers gem. Looks best in natural sunlight.
